Heli Cube
Bare bones test of Heli Cube flight controller. Please do let me know what you think!
The html5 version is experimental, controls tend to not work and I have no idea why. YMMV
This is designed to feel like an RC helicopter while simulating realistic('ish) flight aerodynamics. This is this 4th iteration of my controller that first showcased in Long Line Helicopter'ine ( link ) and the second version implemented in Godot. The cargo line code has been ported but requires more testing. But, by giving me some feedback to settle the flight controller code you can help me towards getting that in.
A word of advice before you disembark: flying a helicopter is very different from other vehicles, it can be difficult to wrap your head around. I think of it like being a circus bear on top of a ball. For a proper explanation the rabbit hole probably starts here: Helicopter Flight Controls
Currently the game is setup in a Mode 2 configuration ( further reading ) and I plan to add a Mode 3 configuration soon™
This game expects an xbox controller with analogue shoulder triggers:
- Pause Game: Y button (North) / Start button / Esc
- Pitch Forward/Back: right joypad up/down
- Roll Left/Right: right joypad left/right
- Yaw: left joypad left/right
- Thrust Set Point: dpad up/down
- Engine Set Point: dpad left/right
- Thrust:
- UP: right trigger / left joystick up
- DOWN: left trigger / left joystick down
Pause the game to bring helicopter settings to experiment with the feel and capabilities of the controller. The default config should be good (I hope) for a beginner.
There is no crash damage so go wild.
A brief tutorial to help get you off the ground for the first time:
- turn on your engine: use 'd-pad right' to increase the engine speed to 100% and give it a few seconds, (UI -> screen bottom)
- dial in a bit of positive pitch: 'd-pad up' to dial in 6-7°
- takeoff: simultaneously push 'left joystick forward' to increase the thrust and 'right joystick forward' to tilt the helicopter forward
